We came based on the nice reviews. Starting with the positives - lovely location, very nice interior and exterior, very clean. The staff were very nice. It's a dog friendly pub, and all the dogs were well behaved. They have a wide range of draught ales, lagers, and a good selection of spirits, with a decent cocktails offer at 2 for 12 (I didn't try any myself). Lovely open fire. I would return for drinks, but not food, which brings me to the negative. We both ordered burgers, we had the spicy one, since we both enjoy spicy food. The chips were okay. The salad was a bit plain with no kind of dressing, the homemade coleslaw was very chunky, but tasted fine. The onion rings were the cheap, frozen kind you buy in supermarkets. The burger was unfortunately inedible. We both picked the jalapeos out and ate those, the rest of it was a write-off. The beef patties had a very distinct taste and smell, they smelled off, and they tasted the same way they smelled. They were very hard and dry. I have a feeling they were frozen, possibly a fairly long time ago, or had not been stored properly for freezing and had freezer burned as a result. The taste and smell was strong enough that it made the bacon taste exactly the same, and the cheese was all melted around the bacon and patties too, so we couldn't eat that either. It was fairly horrible. When we paid, I did complain. The lady who served us was very nice, and apologetic. We explained the burgers did not taste nice, and that neither of us were able to finish them because of the taste. She went to speak with the chef, and when she came back, she said he told her it's because the burgers are spicy with hot sauce. I did have to insist that the spiciness was not the issue at all, given that we both ate all the chillies, I think it's fair to say we had no problem with the spiciness. In fact, it wasn't really spicy at all, at least not to my tastes. Jalapeos are mild. So she went back to speak to him again, and when she returned, she offered to knock one of the meals off the bill. I immediately agreed because I was feeling quite awkward by then. She then had some issues tallying the bill, and first tried to charge us the full amount. My partner had to correct her, but I'm sure this was a totally innocent mistake, as I've said, she had been nothing but nice to us since we arrived. I do think they should have knocked off the price of two burgers. Not full meals, we ate most of the rest of the stuff on the plate, but just the price of the standalone burgers on the menu, since both were inedible.
