The pizza in the evening went down really well and they even managed to whip up a gluten and dairy free option there and then for a few of our guests who didnt tell me they were gluten free. The pizza was one of the best Ive had. The staff were all so nice and polite too, and couldnt do enough for us.
Thankyou so much for catering our wedding, I will highly recommend you in the future!
Many Thanks
Mr & Mrs Mathewson

We'd booked feast style sharing platters. The lovely Mac & Cheese we had in the tasting turned up as flavourless milky, penne pasta. The BBQ side of salmon we had at our tasting turned up as very dry, overcooked individual chunks of salmon. The lamb chops were covered in congealed fat. The fat wasn't rendered and they were again overcooked and therefore difficult to eat. The food wasn't even on sharing platters. The sides were not much better. Guests were also left asking for items they could see on other tables, but hadn't received themselves. I could go on and on about the main course and other areas of the food, but suffice to say it was very poor, disappointing and very different to what we had at our tasting. The only slight positive was that the canaps were apparently good (not that we got to try them as the plate that was supposed to be given to us arrived cold and with quite a few missing).
We emailed the next day and gave our feedback. This is the point in time when Bristol Event Catering could have stepped up, apologised, and done the right thing. They did 'an internal investigation' and agreed with the majority of our feedback. We then went through an incredibly painful process of trying to get some kind of compensation.
The compensation they offered was nowhere near reflective of how poor the food was, but after lots of emails back and forth to get to that point, we gave up trying. Mainly because we just wanted it over with.
I then had them telling me they would make the small refund over the course of 6 months! I immediately spoke to James, the MD, who hadn't gotten involved to apologise himself. He reluctantly said he would pay in 3 payments over a 5-week period. The first payment became due, and nothing arrived. I phoned several times but was ignored. Eventually, I got in touch with James, who assured me it would be paid that day. Nothing. I was lied to several times again after this. Then, after fighting to get some kind of payment out of him, I got 100! I couldn't believe it.
Eventually, The Great Tythe Barn (who were great, by the way) stepped in and made the compensation payment.
Obviously we were hugely disappointed with the food, but what followed made the overall experience with them much worse.

BEC catered for my wedding in September at the Great Tythe Barn, communication was great and the team were really helpful in the run up to the wedding. We had a private tasting which we were really impressed with as some of our food was off menu, we had told our guests how amazing the food was going to be based off the tasting we had!
Before the wedding I had asked the team to ensure that the linen they were providing didnt have fold marks and was ironed (this is a pet peeve of mine as so simple to sort). I didnt notice on the day, but looking back on photos this didnt happen and it doesnt look great. Not a big deal but still frustrating.
On the day the team were really helpful, our top table had everything we needed and I was really impressed with the service as well as the other requests I had made regarding my dietary requirements. Canaps and evening pizza were great and we had such good feedback on both. I requested a pizza in our room after the night had ended and it was lovely!
The starter was also great and mostly had positive comments on this, shortly after the day I was told that a few tables hardly had any bread (one table said they had one or two pieces of bread for 9 people). The response from the team on the day was thats all you get given, even if there was the right amount of bread I wouldnt expect that response for the amount we were paying not to have some more bread which would have costed pennies.
Mains - what we had as part of our main was very different from what we tasted at our tasting which was disappointing. The chicken was clearly a lower quality chicken compared to the white juicy chicken breast we had tasted previously and the chips were soggy fries compared to the thick crispy ones we had before. This may seem a small thing but I expected to have the same quality as we had tasted, it wasnt made clear that the food we had tasted wasnt going to be the same food on the day (defeats the object of tasting before hand). I understand this was off menu but I would still expect high quality food, I had spent a lot of money for chips and chicken that would have usually been served as a childrens meal.
The other part of our main seemed fine although after the wedding people had said burgers were cold etc. One guest even rang the venue to complain which is just embarrassing. Some guests didnt have serving spoons and had to wait for sauces that didnt arrive, these are small things which I hear often about catering companies so I know cold food etc can be common when serving 90 guests. Its just a shame this happened when the other reviews were amazing. We didnt have dessert so cant comment on this.
Im unsure whos at fault (caterer or venue) but my first dance photos include 5 or so black bin bags in the corner near the kitchen entrance which ruins the photos as Im unable to crop them out. Again, not impressed considering how much we spent on catering to have bags of rubbish in my first dance photos which was right next to the dance floor.
Ive emailed BEC about the above points (apart from the rubbish in photos) and their response was simply sorry to hear this and well pass the comments onto the right people, I emailed again to say I wasnt happy and received a similar response. When the catering nearly cost as much as the venue, I had hoped for a better response as my issues havent really been solved. Putting the cost aside, its really embarrassing to be told this things from guests and for someone to complain to the venue directly.
All the other reviews are mostly positive so Im unsure if our experience was not to their usual standard, although I would still expect a better response from our complaint after spending so much money. I know catering teams work extremely hard & I know things go wrong but most of the above (linen, bin bags, food quality) could have easily been prevented.
