Today I shared the same sort of bad experience many of you have had with this shopkeeper. I went in to buy a newspaper. I saw a Daily Mirror on the sweet counter, but no other newspapers. He said "what are you looking for?" I said I wanted to buy a different newspaper. He asked if I wanted anything else...I said, just the newspaper. He said, no I can't do that - you have to buy something else. I was about to leave, and looked at him and said "I'm pretty sure that's illegal you know..." He called something to me but I was already near the door. This means that he advertises himself as a Newsagent, but hides his newspapers, and sells them selectively. I'm not an expert, but isn't that against the Trades Descriptions Act ?? Don't buy here - he'd already been very rude to my partner a while ago, over a similar issue. There are enough newsagents in Brighton. He is turning away business, so he's only hurting himself.

First timer at this shop, early morning for a newspaper, told I have to buy other items, he "doesn't make money on just the newspaper". Why sell them then? Not coming back.

I have been buying in this shop for 14+ years and I always try to support local business but after today's treatment I will not set my foot in this shop as loyal customers mean nothing to the guy who works in Kayes News. Whenever I go there I always have spare change but this time I only had my card on me so when shop assistant wanted to charge me extra for a bar of chocolate and crisps I questioned charges and he then told me of minimum spend of 3. I politely mentioned that I thought these charges were not legal anymore. He immediately started to raise his voice and shout at me saying he knows his rights and when I accidentally dropped a bar of chocolate he ordered in a very rude manner to pick it up (whilst I was doing it!). He then snatched pack of crisps off me and threw them on his counter and demanded I leave his shop. I was really shocked by this. I always found him very rude as whenever I went in there he would talk on the phone in foreign language and not for a second he would stop a conversation when serving customers to say "hello" or "thank you", but today's experience was a completely new level of rudeness. I am stunned that this guy gets away with it as I only read couple of reviews today that clearly show I am not the only one who experienced this.
