I'm going to stop going here and make a longer journey into Brighton. Have been here 3 times now. Everytime I feel very uncomfortable and that I'm being judged when asking questions. I find both of the staff arrogant and rude. Maybe they are nicer and more "charming" to older people from Hove who look like they have money

Called in here after a lovely meal at Palmito's nearby. Had never been here before, and on arrival it was clear that the cheese and charcuterie areas were closed. Drinks were still available however (it was not long after 8 pm). Told a pleasant and helpful barman that we would like to share a bottle of wine. He supplied a wine list and when we asked for "a dark red" (and explained that we didn't really understand wine terminology) he said he would go and ask David who we assumed was the manager. Rather than David coming over to speak to us or help in any way, we could see him with the barman a few feet away from us simply wave at the wine list and point at some of the wines listed on there. I could see this and got up to go and speak to him but he literally looked at me and then turned his back on me and walked away. The barman came back and offered us either a 65 or a 75 bottle. We chose the 75 bottle and although it was very nice, it was not what I had asked for. I told the waiter this and he was once more very polite, but did not have the understanding of his wine list. All this time, David was busy doing various things around us but never found the time to speak to us. I would have loved to have asked his advice but he was clearly too busy doing something mysterious with the *closed* cheese counter to speak to us. Rather than trying a second bottle, we left and went somewhere else. Sadly I wouldn't go back - it is clear they have an incredible range of wine, but unfortunately nobody available to make any recommendations to people coming in to try them. Of course, if you know your wine I am sure it will be awesome for you, but if you don't have that knowledge you will struggle and end up paying premium prices for perhaps something you did not want. I don't know what their prospective clientele is with wine at that price, but it clearly isn't simple folk who just want some advice on different wines. I wouldn't recommend unless you have a really good understanding of wine.

We've just had an awful experience going to Curds & Whey in Hove. The man working there (older guy with glasses) seemed really impatient and rude. It's like he resented us even being there. He kept saying "anything else?" in a short, grumpy voice, and he wasn't helpful at all. I asked if they had a certain cheese in, and he just said, "No, we're out of stock.". then asked if they had any similar cheeses, and he just answered "no". We kept asking him for recommendations but he just kept listing cheeses they have without any opinion. He also pretty much pushed us out of the way when we tried to get out of his way to let him get to other cheese, but there were people immediately behind us, and ended up pushing us into them. The whole experience made us feel like he just wanted to get us over and done with and rush us to finish our order. We definitely won't be returning, and will just have to look for another cheese shop for all future purchases.
