I've travelled on the foot ferry several times and have always booked online in advance. It is a great journey between Point Clear, Brightlingsea and Mersea. Highly recommended!

The ferry itself was a nice ride , the helm was nice and friendly. We went from brightlingsea to Mersea , the ferry stops at east Mersea as advertised, east Mersea doesnt hold much in the way of restaurants etc, west Mersea does and that is about a 45min walk from east Mersea ferry drop off. The beaches are ok for a walk along but stoney and muddy at low tide.

Would have given 5 stars as the ride over from Point Clear to Brightlingsea was great. But the way back, the driver stopped 15 feet from the shore and said I cant get any closer. Youre gonna have to get your feet wet, so the 4 of us, two over 60 and one 2 year old had to jump out the boat into deep water, and run to the shore. Our shoes full of water and trousers wet up to the knee. This was at 2pm, so we had to walk around for the rest of the day, and walk 2 miles, with soaking wet feet. Not ideal. It felt absolutely horrible, as my socks had sand in them too so it was gritty and rubbing against my ankle and got very painful towards the end. The driver literally didnt care that she was stopped 15 feet from the shore. Its not like it was a free service. We paid 18 in total for the trip. Very disappointed as it put a dampener (quite literally!) on our day out. There was a group of old ladies who wanted to take the ferry over to brightlingsea, but after seeing us with our soaking wet legs, they decided against it and went in the pub instead!
