A well hidden Iron Age Hillfort within the Stourhead Estate. The site covers around six acres and sits on the summit of a flat ridge. The double ramparted enclosure has entrances on the east and west sides, and a modern track has been created through the sight, allowing walkers to pass through. Using a little imagination its not hard to create an image of past scenes, literally walking in the footsteps of history. We stopped to enjoy our packed lunch close by, the sounds of birds around us in the trees creating a good vibe. We like walking the Stourhead Estate parklands, particularly during winter months when other rural country paths can be wet and muddy, and the hillfort adds an extra interest. As a footnote, the site is gated and signs indicate dogs are not permitted due to sheep grazing. Dog walkers are encouraged to walk the perimeter.
