I struggle to believe the positive reviews about this hotel. I arrived during the day when there were two staff there in the kitchen area. I was shown through the shockingly dirty pub area, up an incredibly steep staircase to the one room that had been "cleaned". The carpets, walls and windows were just as filthy as the downstairs area. I would never set foot in that shower. The entire building reeked of stale beer. I wrote off the 40, turned around and left. The place is severely neglected and looks as though the owner just wants to get rid of it. I can't say I blame him. If you don't believe me, go on Google Street View and have a look at the building. The person who showed me around nodded understandingly as I explained that I would not/ could not stay there. I went online and booked a room at the Midland Hotel. For an extra 25 (last minute booking might have made it cheaper), stayed in an amazing, Victorian hotel, steeped in history and clean as a whistle.
