It is inexcusable that your temps are not paid London Living Wage. Evidence shows temp and/or zero-hours work is incredibly precarious. The workforce is disproportionately made up of vulnerable people struggling to make ends. Almost half of agency workers are younger people (47.9% aged 18-35), either living with parents or turning over 60% of their income (for 20-somethings, down to 40% for 30-somethings) to private landlords. Other gig workers are facing complex barriers to full-time entry i.e. disabled people twice as likely to be unemployed after a year's leave, and the multiple specific challenges faced by carers, mothers, veterans trying to (re)enter work. Too many gig workers are stuck in a flurry of unsteady, insecure contracts, doing unfulfilling work with minimal employment protections/rights/room to grow, all while bearing the brunt of multiple risks outsourced to them by both agency and end client. Many live constant fear of destitution. To pay a researcher 8 an hour - just 13 pence above National Living Wage, some 75 pence below Real Living Wage and 2.20 short of LLW is a cruel insult at a time of rising consumer prices and given the state of the housing/rental market and the NHS crisis, to name but a few of the obvious contextual pressures. If your business model relies on undercutting competitors through bleeding an insecure workforce dry then you simply do not deserve to compete.
