I bought my son and daughter to HKJ when they were 6 and 7 and they're now 16 and 17. Both achieved their junior black belts. I wanted them both to feel confident in new situations and never to feel threatened or intimidated. The number 1 rule in the club is 'if you can, run away' and that was instilled in them from the start. Of course it may not always be possible to run away and so they learnt how to apply a range of techniques from a variety of martial arts to help them defend themselves and subdue an attacker. The techniques taught by Sensei Steve are VERY effective, no matter how big or small you are. You don't need to be physically fit as these techniques use an attackers force against themselves. I believe all children should be taught the basics of self defence, it's such an important life skill and with a structured progression through regular gradings, they love earning their new belts and progressing to the coveted Black Belt. Learning a martial art takes commitment and dedication and these characteristics shine out when they start looking for part time jobs. I've enjoyed watching them develop their skills so much over the years, that I even started joining the classes myself (with a couple of the other Dads). It's great fun, it keeps you fit, you learn something new every week and its such a friendly family-orientated club. I highly recommend it.

Adults and children, male and female, of all ages! All abilities! Gain confidence! Get fitter! Loose weight! Learn to defend yourself! Learn at your own pace! A nice relaxed learning atmosphere in a superb, large sports hall Not your traditional martial arts club

What an amazing experience. Steve is an exceptionally great trainer, conscious of a beginner in the mix, not exerting me too much within the activities. Ensuring I get paired with someone that I can work , I usually get assigned Matt. Matt is a Black Belt and his passion for the art is apparent, I love it when he pushes me to excel that little bit more. The rest of the members are a friendly bunch, they don't just go there to train, but help, assist and support each other. Fun, entertaining and welcome is how I would describe the learning of Martial Arts at HKJ.
