Recently, I visited Balfes in Waterloo to replace my bike's BB bearings. However, three days later, they informed me that the wrong BB was installed by Balfes in Kennington (now Cycle Fix) back in 2018. I was alarmed as I had been using the bike for five years, unaware of its potential safety hazard. Despite providing an email chain from 2018 to prove that Balfes in Kennington installed the BB, Balfes in Waterloo still quoted me 160 for a new one. They didn't acknowledge that it was their mistake to install the wrong BB. After showing them the email chain, they agreed to install the new BB for free, but they still insisted on charging me 129, which was significantly more expensive than the online price. I declined their offer as it only takes around 10 minutes to fit a new BB. Moreover, they claimed that the BB was "old" and "worn out," but it is possible to replace the bearings, so their claim was not entirely accurate. I found it unacceptable that even after ten years of being an on-and-off customer of Balfes, they were not willing to take responsibility for their error and fix it at cost. It was inconvenient to be told to come back on Sunday to speak with the manager, and it added to the frustration of the situation. This experience was not acceptable, particularly since I had been a customer of Balfes on and off for ten years. Any reputable bike shop would have acknowledged their mistake and offered to fix it at cost, at the very least.
