My son who has recently turned 16 has a Barclays Plus account which is supposed to be automatically upgraded to a Young Persons account with access to online banking when he turns16. My other 2 children who also both hold Barclays Plus accounts received letters approximately one month before their 16th birthdays to advise them that their accounts would automatically be upgraded with instructions as to how to access online banking once the upgrade had occurred. My son has not yet received a letter and neither has his account been upgraded. Upon querying this at the local branch on the High Street they told him that there was nothing they could do and he would have to simply wait for his letter to arrive. Since this was not forthcoming he then proceeded to call the customer service number to find out if there was something they could do to assist. They told him that he needed to go into the local branch and they would be able to sort this out for him. They then made an appointment on his behalf at the local branch for the next day at 3:30 and advised him on what he would need to take with him. When he arrived at the appointed time he was turned away as no appointment had been made. He was, however, able to secure an appointment for later in the day. Once again, he was turned away and told that there is nothing they can do and he must wait for his letter. Quite clearly the letter isn't coming and an error has occurred as the account has not automatically upgraded like those of his siblings. He is desperate to spend his birthday money on a PC upgrade for himself and needs online banking in order to purchase the components. I think it is incredibly poor customer service that absolutely no-one is prepared to take ownership of this and look into what might have gone wrong as it is glaringly obvious that something has. He now has all this money sitting in his account that he cannot access unless he goes and draws it all out of the bank and deposits it in my account so that I can make the purchase for him. Since online banking is supposed to be a feature of this account once he turns 16, it is unacceptable that this is not available and it seems that it never will be. He will now be applying for an account at another bank and closing this account. Shocking service!
