The close formation flying with my friends onboard the chase plane was incredible, and I now have many amazing photos and videos of me flying in a Spitfire over the Kent countryside.
And best of all, I actually took control of this wonderful 80 year old Spitfire and flew her down to the south coast where my pilot, Dunc Mason, performed a couple of victory rolls over the sea at Beachy Head! Wow!!
My sincere heartfelt thanks to ALL at Biggin Hill Heritage Hanger for their hard work and dedication organising these flights, to the engineers that maintain these incredible machines, to the pilots that fly them who must surely get a buzz each time they climb into the cockpit, and to the rest of the crew that ensure the smooth running of the ground operation. Hospitality and professionalism were second to none, and nothing was too much effort. Special thanks to Ray, the Ops Manager - he's the glue that holds it all together, making sure we were well looked after and keeping us informed of developments whilst we waited for my flight; not an easy task when the weather wouldn't settle and we had to rearrange the flight a few days later.
As a young boy, the Spitfire captured my imagination and I dreamt that one day I would fly one. It's taken many long years and the experience was quite emotional, but at last, I've finally managed to fulfil my boyhood dream, and I can now say that "I have flown a Spitfire!"
