If you want to know what good country pubs used to be like, the Holly Bush is the place. Situated in a tiny village on the side of a valley above the River Derwent, the stone-built Inn's layout survives intact, a maze of rooms with open fires and even a cosy snug. Outside there's a covered yard and open seating area complete with a real sand beach! The friendliest of welcomes awaits and the choice of beers is extensive. Marstons Pedigree was my pick, expertly poured from a jug fetched from the cellar, just like they've always done. Locally sourced pork pies feature on the menu of tempting dishes. Outstanding, I wish it was my local!

Quaint and charming, good to see an old pub doing well, they do a very nice and reasonable Sunday lunch (approximately 14 per person for the main, drinks and pudding are extra). It is very popular so make sure you book. One word of warning- there is only space for about 6 cars on the road outside the pub so get there early or not with a car.
