My mother in law had an MOT at Chapel Motors and there were 3 minor advisories, discs worn but not seriously weakened and 1 tyre worn close to legal limit/edge. 3 days and 35 miles later, when pulling away from a junction the front o/s wheel came away from the ball joint and drive shaft. The car was towed to chapel motors and Dean the mechanic who had carried out the MOT was straight on the defensive and said my mother in law must have hit something and damaged the car, this was totally unfounded and untrue. I had spoken to 3 different mechanics who stated it was a failed ball joint due to water ingress and rust and should have been picked up on the MOT. Dean fixed the car but charged my mother in law 436 for the work that he carried out, replace ball joint, osf drive shaft, gear oil and 3 hours labour. Having lost faith in the garage, my mother in law took the car to a garage in Stamford, the mechanic Rob is also an ex MOT tester, and he found the following work needed to be carried out, bear in mind this was literally 40-50 miles after the MOT had been done at Chapel Motors. Rear Discs and Pads worn and DANGEROUS, one pad not connected to disc and was spinning freely around the disc. Rear Coil spring broken, DANGEROUS, would not let the car be driven until fixed. Front anti roll bar link needed replacing. n/s lower ball joint needed replacing. inner CV joint needed replacing. 2 new rear tyres. Total cost 833.80 (a video was carried out before the work was done in order to show my mother in law the state the car was in) Chapel Motors refunded 288.85 back as a goodwill gesture, but bear in mind if they had of carried out the MOT to a better standard and picked up the failing ball joint, there would have been no damage to the drive shaft etc. It was a miracle my mother in law was not travelling at any great speed when the wheel came away, had that of been the case, then this would be a completely different story/situation!
