Newly refurbished the centre was clean and modern. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. You could tell they genuinely want the best for the animals they care for.

We had a lovely experience a long time ago now. It was about 1996 and we had recently lost our beloved cat Simba. I rang the Animal Welfare and told them how upset we were and they told us to come down to their cattery which was on Walney then. They wanted to know what we would like and I said we would love another tabby. The lady went away and brought a cage back with a tabby in it that had just been spayed, judging by all the fur that had been taken off her side and a long stitched up scar. When we looked at her, she just snarled and hissed at us like a wild animal. We were really frightened and didnt know what to say. The lady said that shed had a rough life and was a stray and had just had a litter of kittens. We just looked at each other, not knowing what to say. We didnt like to refuse her, but she was the complete opposite of our beloved Simba. So off we went with our new cat. They reckoned she was about two years old at the time. When we arrived home, out of the cage she came! She wasnt happy at all, but we just let her go where she wanted and have a good look round. After a while, we went to see where she was, but we couldnt find her anywhere. We searched the house for an hour and realised there was top opening window which we assumed must be where shed gone. We put our coats on to search the area and began to realise wed made a big mistake. Suddenly we saw her. The kitchen table had a wood support under it and she was stretched out on that hiding. We were so relieved. After a few weeks, she settled down and stopped growling at us and eventually realised that she quite liked us, and we liked her. What a different cat! She enjoyed all her favourite places in the house to stretch out on and absolutely loved the garden, especially when we were out sunbathing. She would take over the sun beds with us. When we got her, she was called Sandra and we named her Sophie. She was the love of our lives, and after 15 years at the age of 17, we lost our Sophie after becoming ill with a tumour, she is buried in our garden by the bird table, where she used to sit watching the birds. We havent had another since, because we were so upset at losing her, but now we are in our 70s We are thinking of helping another poor cat, who needs loads of love and care, perhaps the Animal Welfare can find one for us again, we could give it a loving home.
