What a fabulous museum! Only a five minute drive from the centre of Barnard Castle, the building alone is magnificent, constructed in the style of a French chateau. Came here with a tour group and stayed about two and a half hours. We were met by a very enthusiastic guide who let us know where to find the different exhibitions. You can also get a useful information leaflet and map at the reception desk. An impressive and ornate staircase leads up to the first and second floor galleries (there's also a lift). The visit began with an exhibition and video telling the story of the extraordinary couple who founded this museum. The galleries are spacious and filled with beautiful furniture, interior decoration, ceramics, costumes, musical instruments, curiosities and treasures. Everything is beautifully displayed and clearly labelled. The highlight of our visit was of course the Silver Swan. The detail and craftsmanship are amazing. It's not working at present because it is undergoing repairs, but we watched a very good video showing its movements. I loved the picture galleries with works ranging from medieval religious art to 18th and 19th century masterpieces, including two Canalettos. There's a beautiful gift shop, a caf and toilets on the ground floor. Had a nice stroll in the parterre garden but did not get time to explore the woodland and nature trail. You really need an entire day to see it all! Will definitely return.
