We approached the Ermine Street Guard to attend the funeral of a dear friend and colleague of ours, who had a great interest in Rome & Roman history. Once we discussed his wishes for his funeral, he asked for a Roman funeral, so we did the next best thing! Whilst not ESG's main domain, they happily obliged to attend his funeral. The price quoted by the ESG per man was surprisingly reasonable, with just the additional travel costs. The two volunteers who attended (Derek & Peter) were attentive and open to their involvement in the service, making suggestions such as placing a sword & helmet on the coffin in the chapel. We asked that Derek & Peter meet the hearse at the main gates, and escort the hearse down to the chapel, and escort the coffin in, where they remained beside the coffin throughout the service. There were very few people who knew about this 'surprise' we had planned, and there was a buzz around the congregation who had seen two Roman soldiers stood at the main entrance awaiting the arrival of the hearse. There was huge smile of delight on my face, as I saw the hearse escorted by two soldiers approaching, their uniforms far exceeding anything we expected. The professionalism, passion and care shown was exceptional, the uniforms were first class, his widow, and all the congregation really loved the touch you added to his final day. My only regret is that I didn't get to personally thank Derek & Peter myself prior to their departing, due to having to change before the cemetery office closed. Well done ESG, Derek & Peter, you did a sterling job.
