A few months ago, I approached the two main, independent, monumental masons who serve the Barking area with an unusual proposal.
I sent them a picture of a dilapidated gravestone at St Margarets Barking, which recorded the burials of my Victorian ancestors. It was broken, vandalised, and in such a public position, in the middle of a path, that it was likely that it would have to be removed as hazardous.
I asked whether they would be willing to try to put the pieces back together. As these were in a fragile state, there was some risk involved to the gravestone, and to the reputation of the firm who undertook the challenge.
One company turned me down. A Elfes, by contrast, engaged in a constructive discussion as to what I wanted and what, from their expert perspective, might be possible.
We came to an agreement, and within a few weeks the stone had been removed to their premises, design work regarding reassembly undertaken, some new pieces made out of stone that matched the original, and the whole thing reassembled in the churchyard. I was present for both the removal and the reinstallation and was impressed by the professionalism and care of all the workers involved.
To say I am delighted with the outcome would be a great understatement. I also know that the local council, who are responsible for this churchyard consider the work to be a massive improvement.
Finally, I must mention that this work was done at no cost to me at all, since A Elfes saw this as an opportunity to demonstrate their skills in the context of greatly improving a local amenity and improving the safety of people passing this hazard on the footpath.
I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this company to you.
