I am a local amateur photographer and since 2012 a member of blipfoto, an international group of amateur photographers who post a daily photo online to highlight something of interest from their life. I photographed this Church exterior a few years ago. I knew nothing of the history then, but now I know a little more from researching it. It has a peaceful aura and stands for the undying faith in Christ Our Lord in a very uncertain age. It was very sad and distressing to see the windows all boarded up. I am interested in environmental beauty and buildings of religious and historical significance. St. James Church is, in my opinion, a cultural and religious asset to the neighbour of Church and the vaster community, worthy to be maintained and preserved for this generation and those to come. St. Oswald is said to have stayed on this site in 642 AD when there was an early church built there. Churches at this time are in great danger of being closed if attendance fails. Community use of the old buildings with respect to God built into that usage, is better than letting them ruin or be de constructed. With this Church being in the central position location of the Leeds Liverpool canal, that speaks in it's favour. It could offer basic food and non alcoholic beverages for walkers and passing boaters. It could have spiritual information and provide help to those seeking religious help. There are Church bells worth saving. I hope the Church can continue to be really treasured functioning as a place of worship for Christ the Lord and perhaps crowd funded or a group of Friends work on a way forward to save it from being lost.
